Mathematics

At Chartham Primary school we teach mathematics through the mastery approach using a programme developed by the ‘White Rose Maths Hub’. This approach aims to provide all children with a comprehensive knowledge and detailed understanding of the maths curriculum that will prepare them for the next stage of their education and beyond.

It ensures that all children are able to immerse themselves in all areas of maths and develop their fluency sufficiently to enable them to access reasoning and problem solving challenges that are practical and relevant. It moves their understanding from concrete, through the use of manipulatives, into pictorial representations and finally to be able to use abstract thinking to not only access all strands of the subject, but to clearly see the links between these areas.

In EYFS and KS1 we use the Mastering Number programme alongside White Rose. Matsering Number aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.
