Oak Year 4

Welcome to Oak Class!

Our class teacher is Mr Forecast. We are very lucky to have Mrs Fitzgerald and Mrs Casey working with us too!

Back to School Reminders:

PE Day and Forest School

We have Forest School (in the morning) and PE (in the afternoon) on Wednesdays. The children should come to school in their Forest School clothes so they are ready to go straight away. They will get changed after break time into their PE kits. You will need a plastic bag to put their Forest School clothes in to avoid messy bags and lockers!

Our topic for PE this term is badminton. Please make sure you will be warm enough, especially as it will start to get cold! We are planning to change the PE t-shirts to house team coloured t-shirts later on in the school year – therefore, if your child needs a new PE t-shirt, it is advisable to buy a plain white t-shirt during this interim period.

Forest School will be working differently compared to last year. Oak Class will be having Forest School on a Wednesday morning for this term. Old and warm clothes are a must for these sessions as Autumn and Winter will probably be cold and wet! Wellies are an easy way to prevent tedious shoe cleaning too!

Homework

Homework is set on Fridays on Tapestry and will need to be completed and returned on Wednesdays. This will often consist of spellings based on the spelling rules we have looked at in class that week as well as reminders to practise your times tables.

Reading

Reader of the Week is awarded on a Friday. Please try to be a 'responsible reader' by reading at home every day and continue to support your children with their reading at home.

Maths Master

The Maths Master is also awarded on a Friday. It is important for the children to continue to practise their times-tables whenever possible (even if they have achieved their white wristband).

Our topics and big questions for Term 1

Maths

We follow the ‘White Rose Maths’ scheme of learning. This term we will be looking at number and place value. We will be focusing on the recognition of each digit, rounding, Roman numerals, negative numbers, count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1000 and solving number and practical problems using estimation.

Topic (History)

Our topic this term is Romans versus Egyptians. Our big question is ‘What do we own?’. We will be focusing on how the Romans came into British history and how the Romans changed Britain until the present day.

Science

Our topic this term is Sound. Our big question is ‘How do we identify sound?’. By making cross-curricular links to music and outdoor learning, we will be focusing on how sound is made and how sound can change depending on tone and pitch.

PSHE

We follow the 'Jigsaw' scheme of learning for PHSE. This term we will be looking at ‘Being Me in My World’ which looks at the school community, looking at rights and responsibilities and being a team.

Music

This term, we will be looking at music from the film 'Mamma Mia'. We will be recognising the basic style indicators of ABBA music and how their style of music has changed over time.

Our reading book for the term

Our book this term is Adventures on Trains: Kidnap on the California Comet by M.G. Leonard and Sam Sedgman.
