Oak Year 4

Welcome to Year 4 Oak Class!

Our class teacher is Miss Cardigan. We are also lucky to have the support of Miss Stevens and Mrs Benson.

Term 3 Information:

Our P.E day is Thursday.

We will be having Forest School on a Monday.

Our topic for PE is 'Hockey'

Please make sure you will be warm enough, especially as it is still cold!

We are planning to change the PE t-shirts to house team coloured t-shirts later on in

the school year – therefore, if your child needs a new PE t-shirt, it is advisable to buy a plain white t-shirt during this interim period.

Homework is set on Friday. It will be uploaded to Tapestry and will consist of spellings based on the spelling rules we have looked at in class that week as well as reminders to practise your times tables. In addition to this, there is a topic 'bingo' sheet which is to be completed throughout the term.

Reading / Reader of the Week

Reader of the Week is awarded on a Friday. Please try to be a 'responsible reader' by reading at home every day and complete your reading journals so that we have a clear overview of the texts you are choosing to read.

Maths Master

The Maths Master is also awarded on a Friday. It is important for the children to continue to practise their times-tables whenever possible. Certificates will be given to the children who reach 'Rock Star' status and above on TTRS. There will also be a prize for any child who becomes a 'Rock Hero'.

We know that this can sometimes be challenging to support at home due to the ever changing way we work. You may find these guides helpful:

Our topics and big questions for Term 3

At Chartham, we follow the ‘White Rose Maths’ scheme of learning.

In term 3, we will be developing our fluency in using multiplication and division strategies as well as extending these through reasoning and problem solving. We will then be working on calculating areas of rectangles and composite shapes before moving onto fractions: a longer unit which will look at identifying fractions, equivalent fractions, improper fractions, finding fractions of amounts and adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator.

At Chartham, we follow the Jane Considine approach in Literacy. The children will experience creating super sentences linked to different plot points in 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' before planning, writing and editing their own narratives.

History and Geography (Topic)

Our topic for term 3 and 4 is 'Rivers and Coasts' and our big question is:

'Do all rivers lead to the coast?'

In term 3 we will be identifying rivers from around the world, developing our knowledge of river features and studying the events of 1858 - 'The Great Stink' which will lead us into looking at river pollution and ways in which we can support keeping our rivers clean.

Our Chemistry topic for term 3 is 'States of Matter'.

We follow the 'Jigsaw' scheme of learning for PHSE. Our unit is  ‘Dreams and Goals’ which looks at what our goals are, how we might achieve them, how we might feel if we face disappointment and strategies to support us in taking the next steps to success.

This term, our big question is 'Why is life like a journey?'. We will be exploring milestones in our own lives as well as looking at important stages within

the different faiths: Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Hinduism.

Our reading book for the term

In Term 3 the children will listen to and read a range of poetry by different poets

and discuss their preferred style and why.
